Faust is a book that can be compared and contrasted to To Kill A Mockingbird. Faust takes place in the time of the middle ages. To Kill A Mockingbird was a novel written in more of a modern day setting without battle and war as Faust had. Both of the two had many differences that are shown and yet, there were still similiarities between them. Faust is a poem/play written way before To Kill A Mockingbird was and the moral behind Faust is much different according to the overall story behind it and what it is trying to say to the audience.
Faust was a play written to portray the ways of how convincing someone can be and how quickly someone would change their lives for anything just to make them content. In Faust, Mephistopheles is offered a deal with the devil to give him a better life. He doesn’t realize what consequences could and will come when he makes the agreement with the devil. Mephistopheles is not content with his life and often results in considering death because of the way he lives each day. His attitude and emotion in Faust make it very obvious that he would do anything to have a different and more enjoyable life. The devil has no problem with Mephistopheles wanting a better life and therefore, the devil makes a agreement with him giving Mephistopheles another chance in another lifestyle. Although, Mephistopheles doesn’t care what will happen on the other side, he just cares about having another more enjoyable life.
On the other hand, To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel written in the late 1900s and it is very different in comparison to Faust. The novel is written about a modern income family in the town of Maycomb dealing with everyday factors and a court case about racism. Atticus is one of the main characters in the novel who defends a person of color in a trial against the Ewell’s. Tom Robinson was accused of rape to Mayella and he was put in jail for his wrong doing, even though Mayella’s father does not know that Mayella was the one who abruptly attacked Tom and kissed him. Everyone is quick to assume that it was Tom Robinson because of his skin color. Racism was a major part in the novel and that is what the moral of the book was; that someone should not be judged based on their skin color.
Faust and To Kill A Mockingbird are unrelateable stories to be talking about. Faust was a poem and play written about the way someone can quickly give something up that is so valuable for something that may be better. Mephistopheles had no idea what might happen after he makes the agreement with the devil. All he knew is that the devil will give him what he wants in one life and in the next life, Mephistopheles has to give the devil what he demands and needs. To Kill A Mockingbird has nothing to do with giving up something so valuable and potentially getting something more useful in the end. Scout deals with everyday challenges and the way that her and Jem have to take on more responsibilities quicker than they are ready for. They are taught to grow up faster than most children were ever supposed to.
Lastly, the two stories have a great meaning behind them. All the stories that we have read throughout the year have had good meaning behind them and something that many people can learn from. Without plays and novels such as these, no one would learn anything and they would have no meaning behind the story. To Kill A Mockingbird and Faust are two great pieces of work that many people could possibly relate to and have an impact on their lives.
